‘Deluxe’ is the key word here: we’re looking for a design-led hotel employing striking / original colours, fabrics and / or finishes and furnishings with an underlying quality and lasting appeal and sense of cool, rather than faddishness. A boutique hotel is cleverly fashionable with a strong first impression; good lighting is a must; details contributing to the winning boutique mood include staff outfits, music and art / objet d’art / wit. Smart bedroom details should include premium toiletries, high quality beds and finishing touches such as fresh flowers and top-notch hospitality trays. In sum, a justification for a premium price must be plain. High quality F&B is important but not at the core of this category, which is more about public areas and rooms.
