Our review

Part of a beautiful Perthshire country estate which has been in the same family for several centuries, the grand manor of Cromlix passed in 2013 into the rather more high-profile ownership of the local Murray family of Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. Opening earlier in 2014, the hotel won the top title Scottish Hotel of the Year thanks to a unique combination of local strength, deep investment in the house and team, and the fact that management from the start was in the award-winning hands of ICMI (Inverlochy Castle Management International) and every key team member had been known to the awards judges for years.

It is an evocative mansion; very Scottish and handsome rather than beautiful externally. The old chapel lends an air of mystery – and is popular for exclusive weddings. The main house has been redecorated in a refreshed yet traditional Highland country house style; there are many open fires and corners in which to relax. The quiet drawing room with bay window is in complete contrast, for example, to the all-new Chez Roux restaurant where plate glass windows look to the garden, where greens and golds and a theatre kitchen offers contemporary class and stylish informality. On the way to dine you will pass through the gorgeous blue and gold cocktail bar which is full of delightful design detail.

Head chef Darin Campbell has won several awards in recent years and the now well-established ICMI / Roux connection has meant the food and beverage division of the Cromlix business has been a huge success: booking ahead is a requirement on most days. Afternoon tea – served on the garden terrace on warmer days – is wildly popular.

Bedrooms and suites, each named after a famous Scot, are, in fact, beautiful; spa suites are the top-end rooms and offer steam showers and freestanding baths. All have unique, Scottish-made and Cromlix-crested toiletries. The accommodation is plush and confident; fabrics are calm in colour, and the Scottish country manor feel has been successfully brought up to date. Room service is of a butler standard. Certain rooms overlook the officially approved Wimbledon colours (purple and green) tennis courts, and as a guest you are free to have a go here in Andy Murray’s very own Perthshire domain.
