Our review

Dating back to 1199, Shieldhill Castle is still very much a fine and imposing place to visit. The castle was held by the Chancellor family for over seven hundred and fifty years until it was turned into a hotel fifty years ago. Since then, of course, much has changed, especially after the Yuill family took over the property four years ago.

It might be said that Mary Yuill and her family arrived just in time. There was a lot that needed doing but after a period of intense renovations, the castle now offers 26 individually styled bedrooms with all the modern comforts one could want. From flat screen TVs, fluffy towels and soft linen, sumptuous and extensive tea and coffee making facilities to luxury toiletries, the old walls have been brought to life yet again. The same can be found in the stable rooms – which offer the same luxury as those in the castle– as well as the newly build log cabins.

To create a sense of permanence, the lounge features styles of the last century with its roaring open fire and comfy sofa, and is open to residents as well as their pets. However, one might have to fight for a place by the fire with Oscar or Milo, the two house cats that roam the hallways.

Throughout the lounges, restaurant or bar, hall ways and bedrooms, candles are lit to create a warm and even more traditional feeling.  With the original chapel still in place, Shieldhill Castle is the perfect place for an intimate wedding. The hotel can be used for exclusive use and with a permanent marquee, can accommodate up to 150 guests for that very special date. The wide open grounds and historic features make it a picture perfect setting.

Shieldhill Castle is an ideal spot to relax and recharge the batteries. For those wanting a bit more excitement, however, the hotel offers murder mystery nights or even music nights such as a Rod Stewart tribute. The fresh Lanarkshire air can be enjoyed during long walks and other activities such as clay pigeon shooting, fishing or golfing, helicopter or hot air balloon flights can be arranged with the help of the wonderful front of house team.

Dining, of course, plays a great part at Shieldhill Castle. Using the freshest local ingredients and Scottish meats and seafood, the kitchen team spoils you every night with innovative dishes, combining the best of Scotland with a modern touch.

With former guests including Nelson Mandela, you will be in great company. From being greeted by a suite of armour to being looked after fabulous team, the odd creaking floor board, little touches of history here and there – and for those who believe -  even its own ghost, Shieldhill Castle is certainly more than just a stay, it’s an experience.
