    Nominees will be a substantial, free-standing property set in gardens or grounds and self-evidently a country house, normally having had a life before conversion to hotel. The exterior setting and presentation is most important, as is the ambiance and décor of public rooms which must form the heart of a ‘genuine feeling’ property, one with a sense of elegance and / or grand comfort irrespective of size. High standards of furnishings, fixtures, fittings, art and ornamenting are prerequisites for success in this competitive category. Bedrooms should be warm and comfortable with elements of homeliness and country living. Local food should be championed at all meals including breakfast; local knowledge is essential. Judges – like guests – should first be left with the happy impression of having stayed in a wonderful, real Scottish country property.
