Our review

Kylesku is certainly worth the journey to explore the wildly wonderful, north west coastline of Scotland. Sutherland is remote, rural, rugged and so romantic with beaches, mountain peaks and glorious wildlife – all of which can be experienced when staying at this 17th century Coaching Inn. With tasteful, creative restoration, it has been transformed into a contemporary, chic, boutique Inn featuring eleven smartly furnished bedrooms, a buzzing bar and restaurant specialising in shellfish, venison and beef.

Designed like a conservatory above the shore (with an outdoor terrace), experience a drink or meal with painterly views of Loch Glendhu and the craggy north face of Quinag.

Guests are greeted with a genuinely warm welcome from the very hands-on owners Sonia and Tanja, (Independent Hoteliers award, 2017), and their friendly staff. Having previously won awards for Good for the Soul, Small Country hotel and Informal Dining, expect a high standard of comfort and hospitality. This is a place to chill out for a few days to enjoy active outdoor adventures (hiking, biking, fishing, boat trips - look out for red deer, golden eagles, seals, otters, porpoise whales) – or for a relaxing, leisurely break.

With a family room and pet friendly facilities, bring the children and your dog to experience a countryside retreat with breath-taking scenery and salt sea air all around. The hotel is on the route map of the North Coast 500, the perfect pit stop for an overnight stay or for breakfast, coffee, lunch, or supper if touring by campervan – non-residents are very welcome.

Kylesku is indeed a foodie destination where the menus (a la carte and daily specials) specialises in locally sourced lobster, langoustine, crab, oysters (landed on the slipway outside the kitchen), and seasonal fish; estate game, pork, beef, homely gastropub and vegetarian dishes for all tastes. The Bar specialises in a fine choice of whisky, gin and craft ales (sample a few with great drink flights), and good range of wines. Breakfast is a gourmet Highland feast too, from porridge, full Scottish (haggis, black pudding, bacon & eggs) to traditional Kedgeree, pancakes with croft jam- and oysters with a Bloody Mary are on offer too!

The fact that many guests return year after year from far and wide for their “Kylesku fix” speaks volumes – rooms are booked up months ahead of the following season. Kylesku is a place to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of the land and the loch, from the views outside to the exemplary food and drink. A truly fabulous, unique Highland experience.
