Our review

Fort William is the outdoor adventure capital of the UK due to its location near Glencoe for mountain climbing, skiing, biking and hiking as well as water sports, fishing, wildlife, horse riding and golf. Loch Leven Hotel is well placed to welcome guests who wish to experience the dramatic scenic landscape all around. This small Country House perched on the edge of the loch in North Ballachulish has 12 comfy bedrooms including two bunk rooms in the courtyard.

The heart of the hotel is the Ferry Bar which is part of the original Coaching Inn dating back to the 17th century. Before the Ballachulish Bridge opened in 1975, travellers had to take the ferry across the loch - vintage photographs of the ferry around the walls preserve this lovely history. Winner of the Scottish Hotel Bar of the Year 2017, the Ferry Bar is a wonderful cosy pub with a vast array of gin, whisky, beer, ale as well as superlative cocktails.

A new venture is the Pixel Spirits Gin Distillery in the garden so that you can enjoy homemade Neptune’s Staircase gin and tonic or perhaps a Vesper cocktail (made famous by James Bond). The Gin School offers guests the chance to concoct a craft gin with their choice of botanicals, herbs and juniper. The food menu is gastropub style ranging from mussels, fish and chips to pork belly and venison steak with homely puddings or local cheese. Just what you need after a day out on the Glencoe mountains.

The hotel offers special 2-night breaks with accommodation and vouchers to use with the Highland activity specialists, Glencoe Activities. Train for climbing indoors before venturing up the high peaks at the Ice Factor which has the largest indoor ice wall in Europe.

For those who just want to relax, the Literature Lounge has hundreds of books in the owners’ private library to borrow and highlights all the famous Scottish novelists – Ian Rankin, J K Rowling and Alexander McCall Smith – original prints from the humorous illustrations from McCall Smith books are hung all around the hotel.

To offer affordable – and fun - accommodation, by summer 2018, a group of wood-clad Eco Pods will be available in the garden for the outdoor glamping experience. But you have the luxury of the Pub and Restaurant just a few minutes’ walk away!
