Our review

If you ever wanted to feel and understand what it felt like to be born of landed gentry then you need to spend at least one night of your life at Mar Hall. Set in the 200-acres estate of the Earls of Mar on the banks of the River Clyde, overlooking the Old Kilpatrick Hills, 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport and less than half an hour from the city it’s the ideal location for a relaxing or business break.

Standing out on the veranda looking down the Clyde to its magnificent Firth now you will begin to feel the experience of being in this impressive building.

The experience certainly does not end their when you enter the old stately home of the Earls of Mar that sense of grandeur and wealth is carried through, with the wonderfully vaulted Grand Hall transporting you further on your journey into the splendour of the late 19th century.

The wonderful thing about Mar Hall is that the feeling does not end with your incredible first impression of the stony grandeur, the rooms in the main house are mirrored in imposing public rooms with vaulted ceilings, full height windows, carved oak doors and original fireplaces. An ambiance of elegance and comfort prevails among period antiques, tapestries, heavy tasselled drapes and designer cushions.

Just beyond reception is the Grand Lounge where you can enjoy afternoon tea simply as it should be done with attentive and friendly service.

Dinner in the Cristal restaurant is more than just a meal it is a dining experience, the wonderfully ornate room is complemented by a standard of cuisine that is at the top of its game and equally presented as well. The service was flawless with continuous attention ensuring glasses are kept replenished and table kept pristinely tidy. The wine list is a classic and the team are happy to help with recommendations.

A resident musician played in the Grand Lounge after dinner and with the dimmed lights made it a very relaxing finish to an excellent night.

The Hotel has its own 18-hole championship golf course and together with the spa, swimming pool sauna, steam and gym so there’s plenty to do and no need to leave the hotel. It’s a very popular destination for those organising an Event, they can cater for anything from 2-350, there are four rooms available with a dedicated Co-ordinator who will look after you.

After an excellent night’s sleep, breakfast brought further treats with daylight a view out to the grounds and further down to the Clyde as the mist rose. With the same focus on the Breakfast as there was at Dinner it finished off the stay superbly.

Privately owned and guided by family values, Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort delivers attentive personal service that is always outstanding but never intrusive. Expect a special 5-star experience.
