Our review

Built into the original Scotsman offices and printing rooms on the South Side of the North Bridge and towering over Waverley Station is now the Scotsman Hotel. Going back to 1905 when the newspaper group moved its offices into the building and used the downstairs access to load the papers onto the train, the building has not lost any of its scale and  charm.

Now The Scotsman Hotel has moved on – from the bustling newspaper world to a very different world of its own, maybe less stressful.

All of the 69 bedrooms provide 5 star comfort and luxury, with most of them providing stunning views over Edinburgh’s City Centre and Princess Street. Relaxation is guaranteed with comfy beds, fresh crisp linen, fluffy towels and luxury toiletries up to a well stocked mini bar.

The lounge and restaurant is dominated by the original marble columns and offers seating on the ground floor level as well as on the upper balcony which can be reached via the glass stair case. Combined with the original wooden panelling along the , and the more modern wine racks and champagne buckets, it can take you back to the grand ambience of the last century. If only for one of the innovative cocktails, sumptuous afternoon tea, or for dinner, a visit here is an absolute must.

Under the lead of head chef Paul Hartley, The Scotsman serves a variety of traditional Scottish dishes, all with a very individual and sometimes very modern twist. Using the best of Scottish produce, meats and seafood, even items like Buffalo can be found on the menu. And yes, even that is local, from the farm of Puddledub in Fife.

The labyrinth of elevators, stair cases and hallways makes for great exploring throughout the hotel. With a great variety of conference and event rooms, anything from a small business meeting up to a wedding can be held here.

The Spa and Health Club has over 20 000 square feet of exercise and relaxation space which allows you to be as active or inactive as you possibly want to be. With 60 different exercise machines and weights to choose from, with a stainless steel swimming pool, sauna or steam room, there is something here for everybody. For those not wanting to lift a finger though, there is the Aveda Spa where a wide variety of treatments are available.

Service is the number one priority of The Scotsman Hotel and all staff will do their best to help you in any way possible. From the friendly welcome at the front desk to the porters and concierge team up to the restaurant staff and not to forget the housekeeping team, all are at hand to make your stay absolutely special.

And as a wee little final touch, there is, of course, the complimentary Scotsman newspaper delivered to your room door!
