Our review

Windlestraw is a beautifully Edwardian house built in 1906 as a wedding present for the future wife of the Scottish cashmere mill owner John King Ballantyne.  The lady was Italian and there are a lot of features in this magnificent house that are of Italian and of course Scottish origin.

Nestling in the Borders Windlestraw is an ideal base from where to explore the rich heritage and countryside of this beautiful area from ruined castles to the famous Abbeys at Melrose and Dryburgh.  There is world class fishing, golfing, mountain biking and of course walking all within easy reach of this jewel of a hotel.

With 6 fabulous 5 * bedrooms and a 2 AA Rosette restaurant you could be forgiven for not venturing outdoors. Curl up in front of one of their open roaring fires and watch the world go by.

John and Sylvia are always here to wish you a very warm and personal welcome. Enjoy an aperitif with other guests before going through to dinner where you will experience some of the finest food Scotland can deliver.

Windlestraw is the place to stay, not generally open to non-residents it provides a peace and tranquillity mixed with great food and service rarely experienced in today’s busy world.
